Bangladesh Lags Behind in Reducing Maternal Mortality Rate
Bangladesh is lagging behind in reducing maternal mortality rate despite its commendable performance in other sectors of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
This was stated by visiting Netherlands Minister for Development Cooperation Agnes van Ardenne at a press conference after a visit to Matlab Health Research Centre of the ICDDR,B in Chandpur district.
He indicated that his country would consider enhancing its contribution to Dhaka-based International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh to undertake remedial measures in this respect.
Citing statistics, he said at least 35 women die everyday in Bangladesh due to childbirth-related complications. “While the country (Bangladesh) is performing well on a number of other Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), it is clearly lagging behind in reducing maternal mortality rate”, the Netherlands Minister told reporters.
