NGO Forum's Evolution

NGO Forum developed its first five-year strategic plan for 2001-2005 in 2000. With the prevailing reality of a considerable coverage and emerging new issues in the area of water supply and sanitation, it has become necessary to ascertain whether the existing strategies have been fulfilled the expectations of the stakeholders and also to rethink about the future organizational and programme strategies. NGOF felt the necessity of reviewing its existing strategies with the context of changing perspectives and environment for developing next five- year (2006-2010) strategic plan.

During the time span of 2 decades NGO Forum unfolded 4 phases to ascend the present stage. The ecla of each phase heralded the blooming of the Forum. In the course of its switching over NGO Forum never deconstructed the previous stairs rather reconstructed those to go through. The forsyte saga of Forum’s evolution are narrated in 4 episodes

Phase-1 (1982-1986)

  • Function as information centre on WatSan

  • Enhancement of information exchange on WatSan

  • Introduction of R&D in WatSan sector

  • More impetus as apex role player in the national WatSan scenario
  • Introduction of community-managed WatSan programme
  • Shift from supply-driven to demand-responsive & decentralized approach
  • Dynamism in implementation of software services
  • Introduction of and emphasis on alternate water supply technologies
  • Strengthening hygiene promotional activities
  • Facilitation of advocacy as part of its apex role

  • Scaling-up of community-managed WatSan approach at the union level
  • Mainstreaming software services to provide demand-responsive support
  • Promotion of various alternate water supply technologies
  • Integrating hygiene with WatSan facilities
  • Strengthening advocacy role to ensure the sector promotion in line with the     govt. policies
  • Strengthening organizational development following issue-based policies     and strategies
  • Establishment & running of Water Quality Testing Laboratory to serve the     sector
  • Establishment & running of NRC as the domain of sectoral knowledge     management
