NGO Forum Hands Over the
Overhead Pipeline Project


NGO Forum for Drinking Water Supply & Sanitation handed over the overhead pipeline project to a local Management Committee at a ceremony held at Shimulia St. Louis Primary School Hall Room on 6 August 2008. The Project was implemented in Shimulia Mission para under Godkhali union of Jhikargachha upazila in Jessore district with a view to providing arsenic-free safe water to the severely arsenic affected community people.

Md. Abu al Hossain, Deputy Commissioner, Jessore was chief guest at the handing ceremony while Akhtar Hossain Azad, Upazila Nirbahi Officer, Jhikargachha was the Special Guest. Chaired by Naren Baidya, Parish Priest of Shimulia Catholic Church, Mizanur Rahman Tota, President, Jessore Press Club, Fakhre Alam, Staff Reporter, Dainik Jai Jai Din, Treasure of the Managment Committe, Dr. Nazmul Hassan, Project Manager, ICBAMP-Project, Alfred Mondol, Treasure of the Pipeline Managment Committeand and Syed Sultan Chand, Regional Manager, Jessore Regional Office, NGO Forum also spoke on the occasion. The speakers appreciated NGO Forum for motivating thousands of people of the Project areas organizing promotional activities like court-yard meeting for womenfolk, community meeting with male members, school programme, street drama, orientation sessions to religious leaders, school teachers, village doctors and members of village arsenic mitigation committees.

Around 40,000 people of 20 villages are beneficiaries of this Project. With the financial assistance from the Japanese Embassy the Project was initiated in April 2007 and concluded in March 2008.

Conference on
Climate Change Held

A two day-long Asian Commonwealth Conference titled ‘Strengthening Role of Civil Society and Media in Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Mitigation in Asia’ from 18-19 August 2008 was held in Pondicherry, India. All India Disaster Mitigation Institute organized with the objective to raise regional awareness and enhance civil society's capacity along with media for innovative climate change adaptation and disaster mitigation. It was a follow-up conference to the earlier held in April in India.

The Conference laid focus on the role of civil society organization and media personnel in communicating and promoting adaptation practice at the grassroots level. Participants from Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore, Pakistan, Maldives alongside the NGO Forum and BSS from Bangladesh took part in the Conference.
